Diversity Mission Statement:

The Department of Technical Communication at the University of Washington is committed to fostering a supportive environment for diverse students, faculty and staff. We recognize that it is essential to identify and educate diverse students in order to achieve our goal of remaining an elite, nationally recognized leader in the field of Technical Communication. At the heart of Technical Communication research, theory, and practice lies a shared understanding of the importance of people as users and consumers of information and technology. To ensure that our research, theory, and practice are always on the forefront of the user experience, we must reflect the diversity of our society. To that end the Department of Technical Communication is committed to identifying, recruiting and retaining diverse faculty, staff and students with respect to race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual and gender identity/orientation, disability, religion, culture, socio-economic status, and geography.

Objectives:

  1. Identify institutional resources and create departmental policies that lead to the recruitment, retention and promotion of under-represented faculty, staff, and students.
  2. Increase the presence of under-represented groups.
  3. Promote the well being of under-represented groups.
  4. Support the advancement within the university of under-represented groups.
  5. Improve the departmental environment for under-represented groups.
  6. Encourage the application, hiring and enrollment of under-represented groups.
  7. Raise departmental awareness of the value and need for under-represented groups.
  8. Celebrate the importance and work of under-represented groups.
